Drop 001 · 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman Landaulet
“I was in a bar in Zurich when someone mentioned a bulletproof Mercedes that once belonged to an African dictator. Naturally, I bought it before finishing my drink.”
One of only two ever produced. Originally commissioned for an African head of state. This is not a car. This is a diplomatic incident on wheels.
“Six and a half tonnes of Cold War engineering, wrapped in cognac leather and bulletproof glass.”
The 600 Pullman was Mercedes-Benz's answer to a question nobody was sensible enough to ask: what if we built a car that could survive a coup d'etat while keeping its passengers in absolute comfort? The hydraulic system alone is more complex than most modern aircraft.
It's like piloting a cruise ship through a country lane.
I've driven it twice. Both times I was terrified. The steering requires the upper body strength of a professional wrestler, and the brakes… well, let's just say they're more of a suggestion than a command.
Someone else should have the privilege of being scared by it.
Yes, I shot it. With a .50 calibre rifle. In my defence, I wanted to test whether the bulletproof glass actually worked. It did.
The bodywork, however, did not fare quite as well. There is now one cosmetic bullet hole in the rear quarter panel. I consider it a feature.
